Women's Fertility - Vitamins Herbs Supplements
Female herbs, vitamins and supplements for women's fertility to aid conception. Natural solutions for infertility. Birth rates, immigrants and fertility demographics.
How long does it take to get pregnant?
If you make love two or three times a week, you have about a 20 to 30 per cent chance of conceiving in any month. It's not unusual, however, for a healthy couple to take up to two years to conceive, as the following women's fertility statistics from the Human Fertilization & Embryology Authority show. - 30 per cent of women conceive within a month of starting to try for a baby.
- 75 per cent conceive within six months.
- 90 per cent conceive within a year.
- 95 per cent conceive within two years.
Women's Fertility Statistics
Pregnancy is most likely if intercourse occurs anywhere from 3 days before ovulation until 2-3 days after ovulation. Sperm can live in a woman’s body up to 5 days after intercourse, although 2 days is more common.
If you do not have sex every forty-eight hours around the middle of your cycle (during your fertile days), you probably will not get pregnant.
The number of eggs a woman is born with decreases dramatically at age 35. By her 43rd birthday, a woman's eggs are less efficient at being fertilized. Men’s fertility also begins to decline from as early as their late 30s. Forty percent of infertility can be traced to men alone, 40 percent to women alone and 20 percent to both.
Approximately 15% of couples attempting their first pregnancy meet with failure after one year of unprotected intercourse.
Diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure) may interfere with conception. Some lubricants used during sex may contain spermicidal chemicals. Petroleum jelly may also interfere with sperm activity. To help resolve lubrication issues, double or triple the amount of foreplay.
Diet and exercise are important for the long-term reproductive health of both men and women. A balanced diet helps to regulate hormones and nourish your reproductive system.
Women who are overweight or obese tend to have a more difficult time becoming pregnant than normal-weight women. Men with increased body mass index (BMI) were significantly more likely to be infertile than normal-weight men, according to research conducted at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The data suggest that a 20-pound increase in mens weight may increase the chance of infertility by about 10 percent.
For every BMI point above 30, conception rates decrease by 4%. Women with a BMI above 35 are between 26% and 49% less likely to conceive than women with a BMI between 21 and 29. Furthermore, pregnancy poses additional health risks to both mother and child if the mother is obese.
Research by by the University of Surrey shows that couples with a previous history of infertility who made changes in their lifestyle, diet and took nutritional supplements had an 80 percent success rate.
Oxidative stress is caused by highly toxic, highly reactive oxygen molecules called free radicals, which can damage tissues if not neutralized by antioxidants. Oxidative stress is implicated in the risk of infertility in both men and women.
Female Vitamins Herbs Supplements
In order to be pregnant think first about B - vitamins. A high potency B-Complex is highly desirable to help conception and protect the fetus from birth defects. Every woman having unprotected sex needs to be taking B-Complex vitamins prior to menopause.
The benefits of folate for women in preventing birth defects are well known, but new research suggests the nutrient also boosts sperm health.
Men with relatively low levels of folate had increased risks for sperm containing either too few or too many chromosomes, according to researchers at the University of California, Berkeley. These types of deficiencies can cause birth defects and miscarriages.
Infertility is associated with low levels of Vitamin D. Vitamin D improves male fertility.
Vitamin E with selenium helps both men and women with fertility. Vitamin E is required for balanced hormone production. Vitamin E is known as the 'sex vitamin' because it carries oxygen to the sex organs. Vitamin E prevents damage to sperm cells and selenium significantly increases sperm motility. Both selenium and Vitamin E are antioxidants - and they work better when taken together.
Zinc is one of the most important nutrients associated with fertility. Zinc is vital for hundreds of enzyme systems, many of which affect sexual performance and fertility in men and women. The growth and development of the embryo, for example, depends on zinc and it is needed for sperm production in men. Hair mineral analysis reveals that a large percentage of couples that fail to conceive or experience miscarriages are found to be zinc deficient. Zinc levels are depleted by stress, smoking, pollution and alcohol. A good source of zinc is oysters.
Exposure to environmental toxins such as mercury, lead, cadmium, pesticides and household cleaning products can interfere with both male and female fertility.
Chlorella is the best fertility herb to detoxify the body. Chlorella removes heavy metals and toxic chemicals from the blood, organs and muscle tissue. Chlorella contains many nutrients to nourish the reproductive system and aid fertility.
Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium) or Ying Yang Huo seems custom-made by nature for diminished male and female libido and fertility. Specifically, Yin Yang Huo has been shown to stimulate the supra renal glands, and trigger increased hormonal secretions. Research has shown that male sperm count and semen density increase substantially. Horny Goat Weed works by increasing nitric oxide levels, which relax smooth muscle. This allows more blood flow to the penis or clitoris.
It also expands the circulatory system's blood vessels, while allowing hormone-enriched blood to penetrate sensitive tissues. The Chinese claim that this improved circulation restores energy, while nervous stimulation is boosted as the brain is flooded with hormone-rich blood.
The use of Horny Goat Weed as a medicinal herb dates back to at least 400 A.D., where it has been used as a tonic for the reproductive system (boosting libido and treating impotence) and as a rejuvenating tonic (to relieve fatigue). Horny Goat Weed is thought to work via modulation of cortisol levels (the primary stress hormone). Under conditions of high stress, the increased cortisol levels are known to cause fatigue and depress sex drive - so bringing cortisol levels back into normal ranges is also thought to help restore normal metabolism, energy levels and libido.
Animal studies show that Horny Goat Weed functions a bit like an adaptogen (such as maca, ashwagandha and siberian and Korean ginseng) by increasing levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine when they are low (an energy-promoting effect), but reducing cortisol levels when they are elevated (an anti-stress effect). There is also evidence that Horny Goat Weed restores low levels of both testosterone and thyroid hormone (bringing low levels back to their normal levels) - which may account for some of the benefits of Horny Goat Weed in improving libido and fertility.
Aspirin appears to increase the activity of the ovaries, allowing them to release multiple eggs during ovulation. It also appears to increase blood flow to the uterus, allowing for a thicker and healthier uterine lining. Women who had experienced multiple miscarriages and who were undergoing IVF treatment were given low doses of aspirin daily. Subsequent pregnancy rates were then compared to pregnancy rates produced by women who received no aspirin therapy. More than 45% of those women taking aspirin during treatment became pregnant, while only 28% of those women not taking aspirin were able to conceive. Take a low dose baby aspirin daily.
Harvard researchers report that women who eat fish regularly during pregnancy give their unborn children a dramatic intellectual advantage. A study on more than 300 children tested at the age of three shows that those whose mothers who ate fish more than twice a week during the second trimester performed better in intelligence tests with improved performance on tests of language and motor skills.
According to Newsweek, the amount of carbohydrates in the diet doesn't affect fertility, but the quality of those carbohydrates does. Eating a lot of rapidly digested carbohydrates that continually boost your blood-sugar and insulin levels higher can lower your chances of getting pregnant. This is especially true if you are eating carbohydrates in place of healthful unsaturated fats. On the other hand, eating whole grains, beans, vegetables and whole fruits — all of which are good sources of slowly digested carbohydrates — can improve ovulation and your chances of getting pregnant.
Is your biological clock ticking?
Some women believe that they need to be free of the tyranny of reproduction and societal expectations. Is this belief selfish and hedonistic?
To a large degree we are biologically programmed to have children. It is part of our genetic inheritance. Psychologically and spiritually - having a child is life-affirming. It changes your life for good.
If you do not have a child yet, protect your options and your ability to conceive. Take care of your health, take vitamins, watch your weight and protect yourself from STD (sexually transmitted diseases). If your boyfriend or spouse is an abusive bum, find a better one. On the other side of the equation, there is no such thing as a perfect mate.
Birth Rates and Fertility Demographics
Immigrants and Fertility The birth rates in Europe and Japan are too low to sustain their current population levels, and this is going to cause increasing problems. The United States today reports about 2.0 births per woman, as against about 1.5 in Western Europe, roughly 1.4 in Eastern Europe, and about 1.3 in Japan. Economists say the population declines in Europe and Japan threaten to damage economic growth for decades.
A poll asked Europeans of child-bearing age why they aren't having children. Here are some of the reasons:
1. A child would be too much of a financial burden (47%) 2. I'm still too young for that (47%) 3. My career plans would be hard to fulfill with a child (37%) 4. I haven't yet found the right partner (28%) 5. I want to have the maximum amount of freedom, not to have to limit myself (27%) 6. I have many interests that would be hard to reconcile with having a child (27%) 7. Children are hard to raise; I am not sure I have the strength and nerves for that (27%) 8. I want to be as independent as possible (26%) 9. I would then have less time for friends (19%) 10. I don't know if my relationship will stay together (17%) 11. I or my partner would be at a career disadvantage if we had a child (16%)
The Muslim birth rate in Europe is three times higher than the non-Muslim one. If current trends continue, the Muslim population of Europe will nearly double by 2015, while the non-Muslim population will shrink by 3.5 percent.
Japanese women say in surveys that they want two children, but they delay or abstain from marriage and motherhood in astonishing numbers because men don't help around the house, because mothers feel isolated in tiny apartments and because it's so hard for a woman to combine career and motherhood.
Is America going to share the same fate as Europe or Japan due to low fertility? Are we going to experience slow economic growth and stagnation for decades to come?
If low fertility rates continue, one of the greatest challenges will be financing old-age programs like Social Security and Medicare. Our system is funded not by dollars but by babies. When it was set up, it was assumed that future generations would pay.
In Japan, people mentioned three different issues as obstacles to child-rearing: a.- money worries, b.- the problems of working and having a family, and c.- a lack of support for mothers.
"Everyone has the impression that raising a child is very expensive," one Tokyo student said. But many young couples do not have much money.
Pay is often linked to age, while a disproportionate number of young people and women are employed on poorly-paid temporary contracts. Child allowances are low, while housing and education costs are high.
The financial situation for young couples can be even harder because many women give up work when they have children - sometimes reluctantly. Pregnant women can come under both direct and indirect pressure to leave their place of work.
After the baby is born, Japanese mothers struggle to find affordable child care facilities that can keep infants all day. Others discover that although they have jobs, they bear no resemblance to the ones they left and promotion is no longer a possibility.
Japan, which has closed 4,000 schools in the past 20 years, has a fertility rate — the number of children per woman of childbearing age — of 1.32. The replacement rate, which keeps population from shrinking, is 2.1. Last year deaths exceeded births by 21,408. The U.S. fertility rate is almost at a replacement level. Immigration is a big reason why demographer Nicholas Eberstadt expects America to be the "only industrialized country to hold its share of global population in the next half century."
According to Ben Wattenberg:
"Typically, we don't put money into Social Security for our own pensions. We put in babies... who will pay for our pensions if we don't have children?"
Thanks to immigration, for the first time in 35 years, the U.S. fertility rate has climbed high enough to sustain a stable population, solidifying America's unique status among first-world industrialized nations. The overall fertility rate increased 2 percent between 2005 and 2006, nudging the average number of babies being born to each woman to 2.1, according to the latest government statistics.
This marks the first time since 1971 that the rate has reached a crucial benchmark of population growth: the ability of each generation to replace itself.
About the only thing keeping America from sharing the same fate as Europe or Japan is our illegal immigrants. Hispanic Americans maintain relatively large family sizes in the U.S. If a big fence is built on the Mexican border, American women are going to have to start having more children to maintain our population. The alternative is to have a sensible immigration policy. Like it or not, we are already a bilingual nation.
If immigration is restricted too much, the government will need to provide incentives, such as providing all new mothers with free disposable diapers, free daycare and a government voucher for a new mini-van. Of course, the government could also outlaw birth control and abortions. Contrary to popular opinion, America is blessed with both immigrants and fertility.
