The average weight of American women (164 pounds) and men (191 pounds) has increased 25 pounds since 1960.

Botulinum neurotoxin type A, sold as Allergan Inc.'s Botox remedy for wrinkles, can move from its injection site to the brain, a new study shows.

Scientists injected rats' whisker muscles with botulism toxin. Tests of the rodents' brain tissue found that botulism had been transported to the brain stems, the researchers said in the Journal of Neuroscience. Maybe this helps to explain the behavior of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton... too much Botox!

Warnings About Singulair - Asthma Medicine

The FDA is evaluating available data for a potential link between some serious issues involving mood changes and behavior affecting patients who take Singulair manufactured by Merck. The asthma drug Singulair has been associated with unpleasant mood changes, suicidal thinking and suicide itself.

"The following additional adverse reactions have been reported in post-marketing use: Psychiatric disorders: agitation including aggressive behavior, anxiousness, dream abnormalities and hallucinations, depression, insomnia, irritability, restlessness, suicidal thinking and behavior (including suicide), tremor."
Did you take your vitamins today?

The late Nobel prize winning chemist, Linus Pauling, recommended a minimum of 6,000 mg of Vitamin C daily for optimum results. He lived to the age of 93 with all of his mental faculties intact.

"The principal way in which Vitamin C and other vitamins function is by strengthening the natural protective mechanisms of the human body, especially the immune system, and by increasing the effectiveness of enzymes in catalyzing biochemical reactions."

Researchers at Yale University consistently found that a low concentration of Vitamin E in older people was associated with subsequent decline in physical function.

When older people take both Vitamin E and Vitamin C daily, it reduces their risk of Alzheimer's disease by almost 80 percent, a study shows. It appears that when the two vitamins are taken in high doses they work together to protect neurons. The use of these antioxidant vitamins may offer an attractive strategy for the prevention of Alzheimer disease. It appears the high dose of vitamins available in individual supplements is what provided the additional protection.

Many of our customers are very happy with WonderZyme enzyme therapy. It will help you succeed with your weight loss goals and resolutions like no other product you have ever tried.

Attention "Doctor Mom"

Research shows that a spoonful of honey is more effective than Robitussin® DM (and other DM formula cough syrups) in treating coughs - and is safe for children over 12 months old, according to Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, December 2007.

Honey has long been recognized as a natural remedy and has been used as a medicine for thousands of years. Honey has long been known to have a multitude of healing powers with everything from relieving a sore throat, allergies, healing wounds, etc.

Other research from the University of California, Davis reveals that honey consumption raises antioxidant levels. Honey soothes on contact and has well-established antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, which helps explain its contributions to wound healing.

Exposure to pollutants during pregnancy may have damaging effects that are inherited by at least four generations, according to research. Not only do toxins predispose your kids to disease, they can cut your lifespan by 10 to 20 years and ruin your retirement.

Taking spirulina and chlorella with Bee Pollen improves your cleansing, adds fiber, improves immunity and polarity balance.

Adding turmeric (curry powder) to your diet in capsules or as a spice improves your immune system and is also an excellent liver cleanse and anti-inflammatory.

Liquid Olive Leaf Extract is a natural antibiotic, antibacterial and antifungal. It is a powerful, natural, immune building, infection control, taken orally two or three times a day.

The National Center for Health Statistics report that 40 percent of American adults age 45 to 64 have high blood pressure, while 36 percent are significantly overweight - both are risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

According to CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding, "We need to be absolutely, explicitly clear about one thing: Obesity and (being) overweight are critically important health threats in this country…they have many adverse consequences."

Overweight people face an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, renal failure, cancer, arthritis, mobility problems and sleep disturbances. According to new research, being overweight during one's early 40s increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease decades later.

Harvard researchers report that women who eat fish regularly during pregnancy give their unborn children a dramatic intellectual advantage. A study on more than 300 children tested at the age of three shows that those whose mothers who ate fish more than twice a week during the second trimester performed better in intelligence tests with improved performance on tests of language and motor skills.

The U.N.'s cancer research agency added hormone pills to the list of substances that can cause cancer.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer said that based on consistent evidence from studies in recent years, it was reclassifying hormonal menopause therapy from "possibly carcinogenic" to "carcinogenic."

Read the Dangers of HRT.

Shockingly, about a quarter of U.S. women who stopped taking hormone replacement therapy after it was found to raise the risk of heart disease and some cancers have gone back on it, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said recently.

It is extremely common for menopausal and perimenopausal women to struggle with metabolic changes resulting in weight gain. The body has a much harder time holding onto and benefiting from nutrients as menopause approaches. Therefore, nutritional goals should be to increase the intake of omega-3 fatty acids, for metabolism and cancer-fighting effects; Vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis; antioxidants, folic acid, cleansing and weight loss supplements.

Femhealth offers several menopausal formulas, including our very effective product - MACA for Menopause, peri-menopause and libido. Chlorella has amazing immune enhancing benefits and qualifies as the #1 superfood. Available in both powder and capsules, chlorella is great in smoothies.

Both chlorella and spirulina are very rich in chlorophyll, which helps to detoxify and cleanse toxins from the body. As alkaline foods they balance your body's pH and improve metabolic function. They are chock-full of vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Chlorella is nature's richest source of chlorophyll, DNA & RNA. It provides protein, essential fatty acids, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, antioxidants, special fiber and its own unique Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF).

Chlorella "superfood" benefits include:
1. Provides complete nutrition to normalize body function.
2. Provides fiber and promotes regularity
3. Supports and strengthens the immune system.
4. Detoxifies and purifies the body.
5. Promotes healthy cellular growth and repair to slow down aging.

Berries

Blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, elderberries, goji berries, raspberries and strawberries are rich in phytochemicals such as anthocyanins, ellagic acid, pterostilbene and many other cancer fighting chemicals.

Full of anti-aging antioxidants, berries are a must for great skin. The nutrients improve circulation to the skin and help protect against sun damage.

Eat zinc-rich berries, especially raspberries and strawberries which have high zinc concentrations in their seeds. Zinc is a vital mineral which helps men maintain an erection.

Summer is the best time to find fresh berries. Either pick them yourself or go to the local farmers' market. The pigments that give berries their rich purple, red, black and blue colors are a type of phytochemical that has significant disease-fighting, cell-protecting antioxidant capacity.

Oatmeal Superfood

Oatmeal adds healthy fiber to your diet and helps with lowering cholesterol, weight loss, diabetes, constipation and heart disease.

Oatmeal contains B complex vitamins, protein, fat, minerals and soluble fiber. When eaten regularly, oatmeal helps to lower total cholesterol levels by 25% or more within a month or two. Oatmeal also helps to reduce the bad LDL and raise levels of good HDL cholesterol.

Oatmeal contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber slows down the digestion of carbs which is beneficial to diabetics. It slows down the digestion of starch and you avoid the sharp rises in your blood sugar level that usually occur after a meal.

Oatmeal can also be added to muffins, cookies, pancakes, meatloaf and homemade bread. Our favorite oatmeal is Great Value Instant Oatmeal Real Apples & Cinnamon. Use 2 packets if you're really hungry and sweeten with stevia or honey if desired.

For a double whammy of goodness, add some fresh or frozen berries on top and/or eat a slice of wholewheat toast with honey or berry jam.

Cruciferous Veggies

Cruciferous veggies include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, turnips, collards, Brussels sprouts, sauerkraut, rutabaga, Chinese cabbage, bok choy, horseradish, radishes and watercress.

Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have recently discovered that 3,3'-Diindolylmethane in cruciferous vegetables is a potent modulator of the innate immune response system with potent anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer activity.

Cruciferous vegetables contain a group of chemicals that help to slow the development of lung cancer, according to two new studies. Isothiocyanates are sulphur-containing chemicals that provide much of the flavor found in cruciferous vegetables.

Men may be able to halve their risk of aggressive prostate cancer by adding large amounts of broccoli and cauliflower to their menu.

In a study of nearly 30,000 men, Dr. Richard B. Hayes of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland and colleagues found that men who ate more than a serving of either vegetable each week had roughly half the risk of developing advanced-stage prostate cancer - that had spread beyond the prostate gland - compared with their peers who ate these vegetables less than once a month.

When you treat non-cancerous lesions with [isothiocyanates], the progression of benign lesions into malignancies is actually slowed.
Consuming isothiocyanates help prevent cancer in humans by speeding up the removal of carcinogens from the body. The compound inhibits remaining active carcinogens from instigating tumor growth, while actually preventing inactive carcinogens from mobilizing in the first place. Both studies were published in the September 15, 2005 issue of Cancer Research.

Eat cruciferous vegetables raw, steamed or cooked. Add them to homemade soup. Our favorite is a combination of broccoli, cauliflower
and cheese sauce....mmmmmm!

Onions and Garlic

Garlic was in use at the beginning of recorded history and was found in Egyptian pyramids and ancient Greek temples. There are Biblical references to garlic and ancient medical texts from Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and India each prescribed medical applications for garlic.

Italian researchers in Milan found that people whose diets are rich in onions, garlic, and other alliums have a much lower risk of several types of cancer than those who avoid them.

The researchers used data from several Italian and Swiss cancer studies to look at the relationship between onion and garlic consumption and cancer at several body sites, including the mouth, larynx, esophagus, colon, breast, ovary, and kidneys.

Overall, consumption of onions ranged from 0-14 portions per week among cancer patients and 0-22 portions per week among those without cancer.

Garlic use was also lower among people with cancer, except for those with cancer of the breast, ovary, or prostate. Moderate consumption of onions appeared to reduce the risk of colorectal, laryngeal, and ovarian cancers.

The protective effect was even greater among those who ate the most onions compared to those who ate the least. People who ate the most onions also had a lower risk of oral and esophageal cancers than those who ate the least. Moderate use of garlic was also associated with a lower risk of colorectal and renal cell cancers.

The anticancer effect increased with the more garlic they ate. People who ate the most garlic had a lower risk of all cancers except breast and prostate cancers, which is believed to be associated with hormonal and reproductive issues.

Citrus Superfood

It is always time for citrus fruit or juice: oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, pomelos, tangerines and calamondins (calamansi) are the most popular varieties. Start your day with OJ and lose weight with grapefruit. If you are lucky enough to live in Florida, South Texas or Southern California you can grow your own.

Citrus helps prevent cancer, reduce cholesterol and the risk of birth defects and strokes, and plays a major role in weight loss. An orange, for example, has over 170 different phytochemicals and more than 60 flavinoids, many which have antioxidant effects and anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and blood clot inhibiting properties.

Researchers at the University of Hawaii found that drinking three 6-ounce glasses of grapefruit juice a day reduced the activity of a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 that is thought to activate cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke.

The carotenoids alphacarotene, betacarotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin are all found in citrus fruits. About 10% of dietary carotenoids are converted to vitamin A in the body and contribute 25% of our total vitamin A. They are converted to vitamin A mainly in the intestine and liver.

Lycopene, found in both citrus and tomatoes, reduces the risk of prostate and certain other cancers and plays a key role in the body's defense against aging and many degenerative diseases.

Beans (Legumes)

Beans, soybeans, peas, lentils, and peanuts are collectively known as legumes. Legumes have many of the nutrients known to prevent heart disease, cancer, obesity, and other chronic diseases.

Beans, once known as "the poor people's meat," is now better known as the "healthy people's meat," since they are an excellent source of protein and fiber.

The Nurses Health Study found that eating beans or lentils two or more times per week was associated with a 24% reduced risk of breast cancer.

Consumption of high fiber foods is associated with a lower risk of several chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and diverticulitis. Beans are an excellent source of fiber with at least five grams per one-half cup serving.

To reduce intestinal gas, presoak the beans overnight, then remove any skins that floated to the surface, drain off the soaking liquid and rinse them with clean water before cooking. Navy and lima beans cause the most flatulence. Eat more peanut butter - it is good for you - especially on whole wheat toast.

Sardines Superfood

Sardines are baby herring packed together in a little can. Sardine sandwiches are a favorite of Scandinavian people and are often washed down with a shot of Aalborg aquavit and a beer chaser. Try it someday soon.

Another way to enjoy this superfood treat is to get a jar of herring in sour cream. It is an excellent appetizer and is available in most grocery stores. This is an excellent way to get your omega-3 fatty acids.

Sardines and herring are rich in both calcium and Vitamin D. This is an excellent food for the prevention of osteoporosis, because Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium.

Being moderately overweight increases the risk of high blood pressure, especially before the age of 55, by 30 to 90 percent. Medications to control blood pressure can be costly and can adversely affect people’s quality of life, ie. impotence.

Being moderately overweight increases the risk of diabetes more than three-fold – making overweight a more significant risk factor for diabetes than lack of exercise.

A 20-ounce soda, popular at many convenience stores, contains approximately 250 calories. Downing one of these every day without cutting elsewhere or substantially increasing exercise translates into a whopping extra 26 pounds every year.

Read about the Dangers of HFCS – High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Even the mayor of San Francisco has proposed that grocery chains pay a fee if they sell soft drinks like Coke and Pepsi that are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.

If the plan is approved by the Board of Supervisors, the funds raised would help pay for a city initiative focusing on healthy eating, exercise and the fight against chronic obesity, which strains the city's health-care system

Being moderately overweight also increases a person’s overall cancer risk.

Even a moderate weight loss reduces complaints of feeling sexually unattractive and leads to improved desire, according to a recent study. If people experience benefits and rewards from their weight loss and health efforts, it may motivate them to continue a healthy lifestyle.

In the coming decades, the average American life span is expected to drop by as much as five years!

That's right--for the first time, the average life span is due to drop, and obesity is a major culprit. This will play out, unless the nation works aggressively to slow the rate of obesity, say researchers supported by the National Institute on Aging.

However, consuming a Mediterranean diet can make you live longer. The closer people stuck to a Mediterranean diet, the lower their likelihood of death over a five-year period, according to a study (December 2007) published in Archives of Internal Medicine.

Among nearly 400,000 retired Americans, the closer they stuck to a Mediterranean diet, the lower their likelihood of death over a five-year period.

Eating plenty of fruit, vegetables and fish and less beef and pork, not to mention olive oil rather than saturated fats, is generally accepted to be good for you, but only a few studies have attempted to work out whether such a diet would help people to live longer.

Many believe that obesity leads to a number of serious medical conditions that costs governments a fortune to treat. Researchers have found that while it is true obese people have high medical expenses earlier in life, they die sooner than healthy people and cost less to treat in the long run. Remember, always be good to yourself.

Kym Douglas and Cindy Pearlman, authors of the Hollywood Black Book Of Diet Secrets, say that celebrities such as Heidi Klum eat salads spritzed with vinegar to kill their appetite before heading onto the red carpet, and sniff grapefruit essence to stop sugar cravings.

Place several drops of Grapefruit Essence Extract on top of candles in the hot wax. Enjoy the fresh citrus scent and take off weight and suppress those evil sugar cravings.

Sprinkle a few drops of grapefruit oil extract on your AC/Heat air filter an hour before dinner. Enjoy some aromatherapy.
