  Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome, a cluster of five risk factors (high blood pressure, excess abdominal fat, high blood glucose, high triglycerides, and low HDL or “good” cholesterol) that are predictive of future development of diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Metabolic syndrome greatly increases a person's chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. Because of its strong association with diabetes, metabolic syndrome often is considered a prediabetic condition. Having metabolic syndrome also doubles your risk of stroke.

One-third of adult Americans have metabolic syndrome compared to 15 percent of Europeans. Abdominal fat has long been implicated as a primary suspect in causing the metabolic syndrome. This is sometimes referred to as a “spare tire” or “beer belly.”

There has been a flurry of activity by medical researchers on the subject of metabolic syndrome this past year. Researchers at Yale have found that insulin resistance in skeletal muscle leads to alterations in energy storage that set the stage for the metabolic syndrome.

Being overweight affects the way insulin works in your body. Extra fat tissue can make your body resistant to the action of insulin. The Yale study demonstrates that insulin resistance in skeletal muscle -- caused by decreased ability of muscle to make glycogen, the stored form of carbohydrate from food energy -- can promote an elevated pattern of lipids or fats in the bloodstream that underpins metabolic syndrome.

Another new study from Spain published online in the journal Clinical Nutrition shows
that over 60 per cent of those with metabolic syndrome were vitamin D deficient, compared to only 33 per cent of those without the syndrome.

Vitamin D deficiency has previously been linked to impaired insulin secretion in animals and humans, and has also been linked to insulin resistance in healthy, glucose-tolerant subjects.

In order to avoid metabolic syndrome:

Exercise 30 minutes a day

Take a Vitamin D supplement daily

Avoid too many sweets and fatty foods

Avoid beverages and food containing high fructose corn syrup or crystalline fructose

Eat a high fiber diet
