  L-Arginine Supplements & Nitric Oxide

L-Arginine is a precursor of nitric oxide, a compound that plays a key role in the heart and circulatory system, both at rest and during exercise. Nitric oxide helps the inner lining of blood vessels to dilate and is often used for supporting healthy sexual function. Eighty per cent of the male seminal fluid is made of arginine.

Nitric oxide triggers a biochemical process that leads to relaxed arteries in the sex organs when they're stimulated. When these arteries are relaxed, they can dilate and flush with the blood that causes sexual arousal, which is necessary for sexual performance.

NITRIC OXIDE BENEFITS

  • acts as a vasodilator (blood vessel relaxant)

  • controls blood flow to tissues

  • regulates the binding and release of oxygen to hemoglobin

  • controls the supply of oxygen to mitochondria (cell powerhouses that generate energy)

  • kills parasitic organisms, virus-infected cells, and tumor cells (by inactivating respiratory chain enzymes in their mitochondria)

  • stimulates the production of new mitochondria

Dietary L Arginine supplements may improve the physical fitness of heart failure patients by enhancing their endurance to exercise, according to a French study in the International Journal of Sports Medicine, July 2006.

L-Arginine, which constitutes approximately 5% of the amino acid content of the typical adult diet, is absorbed in the lower 2/3 of the small intestine along with other basic amino acids. L-Arginine stimulates the secretion of a number of important hormones including hypothalamic corticotropin releasing factor (CRF), pituitary growth hormone and prolactin, pancreatic insulin, glucagon, pancreozymin and polypeptide, somatostatin, aldosterone and adrenal catecholamines.

L-Arginine supplements support a healthy immune system and helps with weight loss because it facilitates an increase in muscle mass and a reduction of body fat.

Arginine Side Effects

Arginine is contraindicated in cases of herpes simplex infections. Foods rich in arginine include peanuts, peanut butter, cashew nuts, pecan nuts, walnuts, almonds, chocolate, coconut, cereal grains including white and whole wheat flour, dairy products, gelatin, meat, oats, soybeans and edible seeds. It is also found in smaller amounts in peas, garlic and ginseng.

A diet high in the amino acid lysine and low in arginine can be an effective measure in preventing herpes infections, especially if used in conjunction with lysine supplements.

Lysine by itself is not a powerful HGH enhancer, but when combined with Arginine it increases the power of the Arginine. In addition, there is evidence that a combination of lysine and arginine may increase thymic hormone secretion in older animals and humans, partially reversing the immuno-deficiency of aging. Arginine by itself is an excellent libido booster.
